We have been using InterMapper for 10 years or more and we started out on a Mac server.
In 2007 we were mandated to reduce the number of Server O/S's from 11 down to 2, Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux. When our lease expired on the Mac server in 2008, we moved InterMapper to a VWare virtualized RedHat Linux server. We did run into issues migrating the maps from the Mac to the RedHat server and due to other significant changes to our systems, we abandoned the maps in favour of creating new and improved versions. Earlier this year we wanted to increase the resources on our InterMapper server and the Server Group wanted us to try InterMapper and another server (FlowTraq) as a Windows VM in VMWare. The migration from RedHat to Windows was painless, but despite the additional resources on the two servers, both servers experienced issues that pointed to network related issues. Restoring InterMapper and FlowTraq on RedHat Linux eliminated the issues we were seeing in the Windows environment. We are running our RedHat Linux servers without a GUI front end. IMHO: Running InterMapper on a *NIX system vs. Windows is a technical issue, where OS/X vs Linux is an issue of preference. The current server is an Xserve (Late 2006) monitoring 1500 devices and running InterMapper and InterMapper Remote Access under OS X. Are there any differences between the InterMapper versions for different operating systems? Which operating system should be the preferred one for a new InterMapper server? We are considering either OS X or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 for the new machine.
