Some phones purchased outside of the U.S. (prices usually around $1000 U.S. 
equivalent) may be unlocked from the factory, and not require jailbreaking. The 
OP, however, said they live in the U.S., so I assumed they'd be purchasing an 
ATT GSM iPhone.
