First of all, what if there is no source Word file? What if he wrote it in 
iBooks Author?

Second of all, a non DRM epub can be loaded into iBooks without a problem. In 
fact, you can do this with iBooks Author files, but only if you give them away 
for free.

In short, you cannot sell a DRM-free epub if you use iBooks Author.

You can defend Apple all you want on this, but it is draconian and absurd. 
Imagine if Microsoft claimed 30% of all the money made off any Word file?
