Authors are free to choose another tool with license requirements more to their
liking

Not the same thing at all. Word documents have many destinations. iBooks
documents are designed to be read on Apple hardware. Word is software you paid
for and hence you have some rights to do what you wish with the output. IBA is
free, not paid for, and Apple can establish whatever requirements for using
their free software they like. Don't like it . . .use something else.

It isn't a matter of defending Apple . . .it's a matter of they wrote the
software so they get to establish the rules for using it. In addition, I don't
see it as draconian or absurd at all. Nobody would actually write the text of
their book in IBA . . .it's a layout tool. Text will come in from Word or Pages
or BBedit or TextEdit or whatever. IBA is not designed to be a general purpose
epub creation tool . . .it's designed specifically and solely to produce
iBooks designed for use on Apple's hardware.
