I think saying the only purpose is to for Adobe to "embarrass" Apple is 
a bit too cynical.

I think it's more likely that they are trying to get some public 
customer pressure going.  But that won't work, either.

but basically, Flash and Java would break Apple's control over the 
iPhone platform - the control that they've tried to maintain by not 
releasing an SDK until forced to by the community, then keeping that SDK 
under tight wraps until it was forced open, and by keeping the 
applications developed with the SDK tightly controlled both in 
distribution and in functionality.

When users and developers defect to other platforms, and when Adobe and 
Sun deliver versions of Flash and Java that let Apple control the 
applications delivered to the iPhone, Apple will let it happen.
