Re-read Duncan's email and do all the things he suggested. Especially setting the IP to 0.0.0.0. Also please fix your mail client to send plain text replies.
You don't really need to put the BMC on a different subnet. That was only a suggestion if you don't have a seperate management port. Was that the full output from when you type "ipmitool lan print 1"? It seemed that parts were missing. Powering off the system doesn't affect the BMC. You need to completely unplug it. The BMC is still running when the system is "off"'. The fact that ssh died when you set the IP and MAC to be the same as eth0 means that the BMC is doing something over the network.
