Hi,
You need to execute the following command
"service ipmi start" before executing any ipmitool commands.
You can execute the following command to make this permanent from the
next reboot.
"chkconfig ipmi on"

Also which system do you use? Does it support IPMI? In dmesg, you can
see if any of the IPMI interface is initialized while loading the driver
( ipmi_si) with ipmi_msghandler and ipmi_devintf.

Hi,
if you are using Ubuntu, try to type sudo before the ipmitool command. I
had the same problem and this was the solution.
