Is it possible?  Yes.

Is it easy?  No!

It also depends on whether you are trying to accomplish raster separations or 
vector separations and what you plan to do with the seps when you are done.

Given that separated PDFs haven't been part of any workflow formany years, I'd 
be curious to hear why you are investing in this today?
