What I keep wondering is why we don't modify the
dxr3 xine plugin to
use the pvr 350 mpeg decoder instead of the dxr3
decoder. I have a
dxr3 card. It's useless for mythtv because it only
accepts mpeg input,
but the DVD playback quality is excellent, and it
basically uses the same
concept as the mpeg decoder in the PVR 350, right?
Or... if we wanted a proof of concept without
navigation controls, could
we simply rip & transcode a DVD to mpeg2 and pipe
the result directly
to /dev/video16? What are the mpeg specs supported
by video16?
That's how livetv playback works, right?
Its been done before but the audio was coming out of
the local card and the buffering in the 350 made the
delay variable so it was hard to get audio & video in
sync.
Yes if you have an mpeg2 you can just throw it at
/dev/video16.
I'm not sure I understand this. Myth can stream livetv to disk, then
play it back
on the PVR 350 without any sync issues. The audio comes out of my PVR
350 and is looped into the sound card, then sent to the speakers. What's
the difference between that and what has already been tried? Was the audio
separate from the video mpeg or something?
Problem is you have to have plugins for every
player/app people want to use (mplayer , xine, others)
and it doesnt help other things like xmame etc.
Also you loose features sometimes such as timestretch
in myth going that way.
I agree that XV support is great to have, but I think it's overkill if
all you
want to do is watch DVDs. You're inserting X11 between the DVD drive
and the card when it isn't necessary at all.
If I can figure out how to rip a dvd to a mpeg2 format (with sound and
no sync issues) that my PVR 350 can understand, then I might be willing
to take a stab at either a xine plugin or a mythtv plugin, whichever is
easiest.
Can anyone give me some command line examples that have been
tried already and are partially working?
