Thanks for your reply. I tried mplayer as suggested, with similar
results. In checking further, I found that the msp3400, saa7115 and
saa7127 modules are not being loaded. When I load these manually,
mplayer works, although there is still no sound. I can see, in the
mplayer terminal output, sound errors, although I don't know what the
resolution is:

I've checked and re-checked the How-to and Troubleshooting guides, but I
can't see why the three modules won't load automatically. Are they
