Sorry to reply 2 times but I forgot to mention two things. The first is that if you upgrade to ivtv-0.8.X and a 2.6.18 kernel the patch is already in the kernel so there is no manual kernel patching. Also after activating this patch some users experience a herringbone distortion pattern on their channels. This is caused by having a strong signal which apparently the pvr500 does not like. If you run into that problem attenuating the signal may help.
