rare, but I have seen it more than once. The places I have seen it
come up is in ancient manuscripts. An interesting exercise would be to
develop a bib(la)tex database for the Early Manuscripts at Oxford
University digital collection

yep... that is what I remember (and that is coming from someone who
forgot his OWN name a couple of times -- extenuating circumstances I
assure you) ;-)

I will look into this, and I also found biber (a biblatex replacement
that has full unicode-6.0 support)

I come from the Feynman parody school "anyone can throw stones, coming
up with an alternative solution is actually helpful". So, I took a very
quick poke at the new sources. None of the zipballs provided by
http://www.jgoodies.com/download/libraries since 1.4.2 have source code
in them (they only have jar files + documentation). By convention,
Gentoo throws all jar files away and recompiles everything from scratch
(thereby insuring full build, if not runtime, compatibility for
everything on the system). Since the zipballs do not come with the
source to rebuild, I cannot imagine any maintainer going through the
hassles to get either a binary or live ebuild accepted into the
canonical portage tree. I'll give the maintainers a poke, but I am not
hopeful...
