Indeed.
I almost never use internal osc.
Often I even need a trimmer on the crystal cap to fine tune.
Sometimes I even use a separate TCXO module that is reference for other 
aspects too.

If you are ONLY blinking LEDs then you can use internal osc, But in real 
world many applications need external crystal, not even ceramic resonator.
