I've been out of the loop for the past couple of months while on
holiday, but I'm going to take a wild stab at this.

The Voodoo chipsets only perform hardware accelaration when the
application is running in fullscreen mode (except the Voodoo Banshee).
That is, if you are doing 3D graphics in a window (the only way J3D
works) then you will see no improvement whatsoever.
