3dfx released version 1.05 of the Voodoo 3 drivers on July 4th but I
haven't had a chance to try them yet to see if they would fix the
problem.  When I spoke with 3dfx in February(?) they indicated they were
aware of the problem and that it would be fixed eventually.  As of
version 1.04 of the drivers it was not fixed.  I intend to build up
another test machine which I will have the Voodoo 3 in and then I'll
test the 1.05 drivers but you could probably beat me to it if you just
try the 1.05 drivers yourself.

And no... there is no "solution".  I suppose as a work around you could
try using Java 3D Direct X (instead of OpenGL).  As Lee points out you
also need to keep your textures down to 256x256 or smaller.
