I lost all hope of ever understanding the Plug-in install when I added 1.4 on W2k, and I now have TWO plug-in control panels, one each for 1.3 and 1.4. In either panel, I can apparently select one of eight different JREs, four each from 1.3 and 1.4. Both control panels, on their Browser tabs, give me the capability of setting the default RT in MSIE and NS6. I don't know how they interact or conflict.
I really hate the idea of abandoning applets, but the churn and the FUD are just getting too much to work around.
