VRML is dead, long live VRML.  It seems to go in cycles.  The newest
incarnation of VRML called X3D will be unveiled at Siggraph.  The Xj3D
project, www.xj3d.org is a sample implementation of this spec that also
is a loader of Java3D.

www.web3d.org is good place to see some of the activity.  the www-vrml
list is another.
