I'm afraid I disagree. While Mac support would be great and certainly a big benefit to Java 3D, I doubt lack of Mac support had much of an impact on the success of Java 3D.
Fading, on hold, or cancelled support of Java 3D in my opinion is a huge mistake of Sun's. APIs like Java 3D are critical to the future success of Java and 3D is a rapidly expanding field.
Any "failure" of Java 3D in my opinion is due to: 1) Difficulty in deploying a Java application (specifically one that needs an extra download). 2) Poor documentation 3) Failure of Sun's management to realize the full value of Java 3D (not enough emphasis on it). Also a failure to realize the technical depth needed to develop something this sophisticated.
Other factors (but no where near as important): bugs and slow feature support/development (lack of support for cutting edge graphics). It took quite a while for transparency to be decently handled by Java 3D (and even now apparently a few people still have some issues with it).

I would like to take a moment to wonder why Jaav3D seems to be losing support from Sun... or atleast why support is being directed to other projects. I can only imagine it is because Java3D has not become as popular as they had hoped.
IF that is the reason... then all I can wonder is WHY DIDNT JAVA3D GET RELEASED FOR THE MAC??????
It is NOT the case that there are THAT many macs in the commercial space. BUT, it IS the case that there are LOTS of macs in the educational space. And being able to write a cross platform 3D app is a TREMENDOUS accomplishment, in general. AND a valuable one. And Mac support is what (in my oppinion) has stopped Java3D from gaining critical mass.
Java3D would have caught on like wildfire. Would have.
