For my type of application Java3D is pretty close to perfect. Performance
is quite good enough. Flexibility and programming productivity is
excellent.

I would very much NOT like to see Java3D go the way that XJ3D took Sun's
VRML97 loader i.e. into the bloat wear sprawl arena. Something which no
longer met the need for a VRML loader as well as the original, while trying
to suppress interest and availability in / of the original.

I'm sorry you feel this way. One of the main problems we had with the
original Sun loader is that it didn't implement all of the VRML97
specification. VRML its is fairly bloated itself. One of things we've
done with the X3D spec is break it into components/profiles so you don't
have to implement all of it. I think most people wanted a Java3D loader
which didn't have all of the scripting and proto's required in the
original VRML specification. You can now get that within X3D as the
Interchange or Interactive profile.

We've had a fair bit of requests for a smaller footprint Xj3D which just
implements a geometry only loader. This could be much smaller then the
whole Xj3D toolkit. This would take a reasonable effort to make the
smallest download possible, but all the pieces are already in Xj3D. But
once you through in PROTO's, scripting, EAI, ie all the runtime pieces
of VRML/X3D you get all the bloat your bemoaning in Xj3D.

We have never supressed the availability of the original loaders. Nor
have we gone out of way to make them more available. We have a limited
amount of time we can devote to free labor. We decided to put that into
developing Xj3D into a fully VRML97/X3D compliant system. We welcome
others whose focus is different to join and help make resources
available to the community.
