IMHO, the question is, should java have multimedia support or not ? future pcs will also be
multimedia and/or TV devices. Currently the jre supports that quite bad, you need optional packages,
native libraries (Java3D, JMF, adv. img. API,...). Also, these libs are somewhat buggy. My experience
with Java3D and JMF libs is, that some graphics card got problems, same thing with adv. imaging API
as I know from a colleague. Currenlty there are at least 3 3D desktop projects, Looking Glass
from SUN, something from Microsoft (don't know the name) and a smalltalk project. Also mobile phones
already have 3D support (in Java too). So I think 3D is the future.
