It's all a matter of balance.

IBM's path took them to financial success, but as a developer I'd much 
rather deal with Sun.  Sun's products focus on making them easy for 
developers to use on their own without Sun's help (consulting, training, 
etc) -- IBM's don't.

Sun's path was nice to developers, but no one seemed to be paying 
adequate attention to how this treating the development community right 
was going to address the bottom line.
