The "neurotic attention to backwards compatibility" is a necessary fact 
of life for many companies and their customers.  This is clearly evident 
in most of the big enterprise players -- IBM, Oracle, Sun, etc, etc -- 
and their customers.

It is possible to innovate without burning compatibility -- it's just 
another design constraint.
