If it was PythonFX we were talking about I have no doubt that there would be many developers eager to jump at it. However, Java isn't really that big in the Linux world so that might be a bit problematic. OTOH GNU and FSF usually jumps at projects they feel will have a big impact on freedom, like trying to implement a free flash suite.
