Well, the main problem is it's not real AIX. It's an "AIX like"
environment called Portable Application Solutions Environment (PASE).

by typing xterm in VNC, but Git still complained.

I guess the bottom line is that it's the environment I'm trying to get
it to work in not Git :-) It's just one of the joys of working on
platform that is completely different from all the others. I
appreciate the comments though.
