After a rather bleak after dinner discussion I thought I might start
this thread. I was wanting to start this discussion.

I hope the topic may be relevant given at least 2 of the Java Posse
have gone through the process of emigrating for their careers sake. My
sister emigrated to Australia a number of years ago. One of my long
standing friends is soon to emigrate to Canada. My most trusted Java
mentor and former technical manager was trying to emigrate to Canada.

A number of different people have been telling me that if they were my
age and in my position they would emigrate. These are not the "were
all doomed" crowed but perfectly conservative sensible people.

I have reached a decision that I am going to apply to emigrate and
just see what happens.

The most logical place for British people to emigrate is generally one
of the other British commonwealth countries namely Australia, Canada
and New Zealand.

I am favouring Canada. I already have family in Australia. The Illegal
Argument Podcast is giving me serious Kiwi envy. I have nothing
against New Zealand and hear very good things about it but I hear it
is very hard to get permission to emigrate there i.e. the New Zealand
government can afford to be very picky about who they allow to
emigrate there because there is so much demand and only limited jobs.

Pay day is on the 28th. I would like to use some of the money to pay
for processing emigration papers (probably between one and two hundred
pounds or so). I need to make a decision about which one to apply to
or end up applying to more than one.

I care about the research I am doing but if brutal cuts to the
Universities continue then I really fear the University may just axe
it due to lack of money. If that happens I could see if another
University wanted to continue it. Even if I get to finish as planned,
emigration papers can take a long long time to process anyway and
there is no guarantee I would get approval.

The emergency budget comes out tomorrow. Big tax hikes are expected
and big cuts everywhere. I expect the UKs best professionals who can
emigrate will get fed up and leave if they can (this isn't to crazy a
bet as historically this has happened under similar circumstances).
The UK's loss could well be other countries (particularly British
commonwealth) gain.

I would just ask that those reading to be considerate as if you knew
how scary it can be not knowing what is going to happen and how bad
things will get it a country which feels so broken and starting to
come apart. I am not alone feeling that way from the conversations I
am having.
