Emigrating because of a very poor (financially, I mean) academic career has been the standard for italian researchers for years. Here the problem is double-faced, that is historically we've been spending in research less than the other western countries, but in addition there's an almost complete lack of meritocracy in the universities (thus huge wastes of funds). That's the reason for which a good bunch of italian researchers emigrate (and that's why I flied away from the university when I finished my doctorate, moving to an industrial career). I repute myself lucky because (so far...) I've found well paid and fun engagements, while a lot of people I know emigrated for better positions and earnings. Fun enough, many went to the UK, so it's sad to learn that the bad time is spreading (even though I believe it will be only for a limited period of time).
I believe that the good approach is moving in search of the best. Fortunately, it has become easier and easier (volcanoes apart) to move around the world. Not having to learn a new language is a huge plus, BTW. On the average, it *seems* that the current italian situation is slightly better of the average in this period, because - in spite of a huge public dept - families have got relatively few debts and good savings.
