I don't disagree with the tool point of view - it's just that I've never been more productive, generally, than since I switched to the Mac three years ago.
Apple could simply have decided that the cost of keeping up with Java releases just isn't worth the downstream benefits. Ironic given that Apple have been keeping up with JDK 6 fairly well (update 22 was only released by Oracle 9 days ago, I got my Apple release this morning). I think this will inflict a degree of damage on Apple - the decision, in the absence of an explanation of the strategy behind it, feels somewhat irrational. Java is associated with Android, Steve hates Android, ergo he can make it (a bit) harder for Google if Java isn't available on the Mac. I'm hoping that Oracle and Apple can work out a deal that results in the Apple JDK source being handed over for future support and enhancement by Oracle. I had been planning a new MacBook Pro purchase immediately after the next refresh early next year, but under the circumstances I've decided to shelve that purchase, and the purchase of a couple of Mac Minis, until I know how things are going to play out.
