Ad revenue is only appropriate for certain types of apps: high volume, high usage.
But yes there is money in android if you have this type of app (a game). My point is google needs to get people buying things off their app store. They need an iTunes equivalent (not the thick client necessarily). The reason people buy so much stuff off the apple app store is it's easy, intuitive, low friction. Google needs this.
