I don't quite understand why is Maven mentioned in this discussion anyway. Maven's modularity only handles build time dependencies and has no bearing on runtime behavior. As far as I know Maven only handles the task of pulling in the dependency binaries but as far as the runtime goes its still the same old classpath/jar hell.
