I agree with Annette that tables are the way to go. Remember that you can make the table invisible for a sighted reader so when printed out there is no indication that the formatting is as a result of a table.
Many formatting problems can be solved by using "invisible" tables. For example, I use this method to make a letter template heading. I use a simple one row 2 column table at the top of my letters. In the right cell I have a right aligned home address and in the left cell I have the recipient address left aligned. As far as I am aware this is the only way of getting text right and left aligned on the same line of a word document. I make the table border setting to none and I am told it looks very smart for sighted readers of the letter. I've only been able to do it by selecting the one paragraph, and going into the paragraph settings dialog box to find out how things are set for that particular paragraph. I would then make adjustments as needed, and then get out of the dialog box so that I could move on to the next paragraph. This is very time consuming and I've since resorted to using tables.
