I suppose I should have been more clear as to what I need. The directions somebody sent earlier as to how to physically copy the sound to the phone is exactly what I was after. I was aware of the format ".M4R", it was just getting the thing on there that was driving me crazier than normal and that's saying something.
Maybe it's just me but iTunes just escapes me why people love it so much. It froze on me yesterday when I was trying a full backup. Here is the basic procedure from memory. 1. Get an mp3 file of a ringtone; it can be anything, they claim up to thirty seconds, but after I updated my IOS I couldn't get a thirty second file to fit, so mine is around 20 seconds. You can use any audio editor i.e. Goldwave whatever. There are a bunch of conversion programs that will convert an mp3 file to m4a. You need to convert it to m4a. I use the Agree Free mp3 to m4a program. Rename the m4a extension to .m4r. Place the .m4r file in the folder which you'll find under your documents folder, my music, iTunes, iTunes Music, Automatically Add to iTunes. As long as you don't have the manually sync music checkbox checkbox checked, you can now sync your phone to the computer and it will transfer the ringtone to your phone. You then go under Settings, Sounds, and you can select that ringtone for all calls for you can assign it to a specific contact. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.
