Wayne, at least part of the explanation probably lies in your MS Word default settings. After pasting a copy of a PDF document into Word, use JAWS key+f to hear what your font, spacing and other format settings you have set by default. Each of these can be changed, either for the specific document or for your default.
Note that the page count makes no difference if you're just reading or editing it with JAWS. Of course, it does show that the PDF format didn't carry over perfectly. But if you intend to print out the document, you may want to change the format settings. I then selected the entire chapter and then copied and pasted it into an MS Word 2007 blank document and the text transferred fine. The problem is that a chapter that is 34 pages has become 86 pages.
