Definitely yes!!! We (Benefit) have had our market within the swedish
retail industry since l989. There we have many installations in shops
that has a size between 1 to 20 clients. The smallest one has only one
computer acting as both client and server. About three years ago we
decided to switch our technology from traditional client/server
technology to Java and as things moved on we jumped onto the EJB track.
As I said since our customers are rather small they can't afford a
bigger as WebLogic so we looked into the marked and found a decent EJB
server called Ejipt from Valto (now included in JRun from Allaire).

Our new application called ECS (Electronic Commerce Solutions) has now
been running for about one year and what we have seen is that EJB is
definetly not a overkill, not even in a shop with only one client!!!
What can kill is high prices and license fee... that's why we now are
following this jboss project. We have had (and has) our performance
battles, but they are copeable. And the advantage of using EJB are
defintely bigger then the problems :-)

* Very easy to add functionality to the system.
* No problem to have shops that are connected to each other to exchange
data and to connect to a head office.
* Now the shops has the path to enter the Internet world. One and the
same Sale EJB component can be used both within the shop, on the
Internet, in a information kiosk at the airport, from the cell phone and
so we can go on...

And it all is a very selling technology! That we have seen when showing
our product to potential customers. "Is this really written in Java???
Shouldn't it be slow then??". And when we are showing or system on SUN's
SunRays the sucess is complete - just take your card and complete the
sell on another SunRay!

With a little luck there might be some hundreds of jBoss installations
running ECS next year, so keep on with all your good work and I will add
mine as soon as there is time!
