My advice would be to stick to Docker for now, unless you see special 
benefits of K8s and other systems. 
We do not have a ready-to-fly Kubernetes setup inside the Jenkins 
infrastructure, and it's also quite complicated to do local development 
with it.

Yes, likely. Note that we do not expect a GSoC student to complete the 
entire project of such scale. In your proposal you can focus on a 
particular area only so that you are not overcommitted.
