An administrative monitor has recommended Java 11 since Jenkins 2.296 (weekly) <https://www.jenkins.io/changelog/#v2.296> and Jenkins 2.303.1 (LTS) <https://www.jenkins.io/changelog-stable/#v2.303.1>. The Docker image default labels were switched to Java 11 in Jenkins 2.307 (weekly) and Jenkins 2.303.1 (LTS). > IMHO we are already in the state when we can announce our intent to drop > support for Java 8, maybe with minimum timeframe of 6/9 months in the > announcement. Red Hat has declared that they will support OpenJDK 8 <https://access.redhat.com/articles/1299013> until May 2026 and will support OpenJDK 11 until October 2024. Amazon Corretto has extended LTS support for Corretto 8 <https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2020/08/amazon-corretto-8-11-support-extended/> to May 2026 and Corretto 11 to September 2027. Oracle will provide Premier Support for Oracle Java 8 SE <https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/java-se-support-roadmap.html> until March 2022 and will provide Premier Support for Oracle Java 11 SE until September 2023. I don't yet see a compelling benefit that would motivate us to drop support for OpenJDK 8. Its support lifetime is almost as long as Java 11.
