if oss isn't an issue here, 'InstallAnywhere' whould be the definitive
choice.
I tried FreeInstaller on win95 an it crashed during each installation.
InstallAnywhere is a java installer including preconfigured scripts
for different plattforms (os)
(jbuilder java edition for linux ships with InstallAnywhere).
InstallAnywhere could be found at ...
