I have two installation suggestions for newbies, gained from HARD experience
;-)
1. Get the servlet 2.2 spec from Sun (the pdf is good to read) and
specifically read the "Deployment descriptor" chapter to understand the
servlet deployment standards set forth by Sun. It's not a long read but is
REALLY REQUIRED to understand the web-app issues. The url is:
http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/download.html#specs
2. Because Jetspeed is built on top of Turbine, one really needs to
understand how to install Turbine first. By getting the "stand-alone"
Turbine and getting that up and running first, the Jetspeed stuff gets A LOT
easier.
It may be worth suggesting this in any installation docs.
Another thought: When servlet engines finally support WAR's properly, that
should really simplify installation. WAR's are supposed to be the standard
Sun way of deploying web applications, and will create the context, the
WEB-INF and all related dirs, and at least put stuff in the right places.
Greetings, Frank
