Denis, before ribbons, there used to be a checkbox in the view menu to make the status line appear. You can still get to the view menu with alt-v in Office 2010 but just now I couldn't quickly figure out where this option appears in the ribbon. You might want to experiment or Google it. I realize you're using thunderbird, which I don't have, but this may point you in the right direction.
