Actually, I would say it is more akin to not painting your house number on the curb. It makes it slightly more difficult for firemen to find your house, but if they look for the flames, they will find it... and passersby will have to actually look at your house to see the house numbers.... But they are still there, in the clear. I was amused that some town in the NE US last year passed some legislation demanding that businesses secure their networks by disabling SSID broadcast, and changing the name on their AP. Like that would have any effect at all.
