of person), in what circumstances, for what reason, doing what?

As I hope my examples illustrated, the threats in these terms are quite
different depending on your environment.

No, don't like that analogy at all.  In the risk scenario I was
discussing (an ignorant / non technical neighbour is blundering around)
MAC filtering makes my network completely inaccessible. He may be able
to see it, especially if I broadcast my SSID, but won't be able to
connect and will probably have no idea why.

I think that you are thinking of a quite different risk scenario -
where a malicious and skilled person wants to get at my network, in
which case I've already agreed that this technique isn't much use.

All of which argument is ultimately pointless, I suppose, except that I
don't like to see people falling into the trap of thinking that everyone
else has the same skills and knowledge that they do.....
