A typical patch cord tester actually tells you almost nothing - only
that the wires are connected. That's OK for a phone cord but it won't
tell you if the cable is good for ethernet. 

In all likelihood you do have a unit with the incorrect RJ45 magnetics,
but usually the failure mode in that case is dependent on the type of
switch its connected to, not the flavor of cable. In fact, the TX and
RX sides of Receiver are identical because it has auto-mdix. But if it
has the wrong magnetics then it might fail for any number of other
reasons.
