I've changed the setting to your recommended (not having ever touched them previously as I remember) and will see how it goes, however... my feeling is that the 7.0.1 I downloaded soon after posting sorted out the problem. FYI I didn't think the power usage problem started when I first installed 7.0.1, but that it started some time after this.
