Hi,

I've seen a few questions on this list recently asking about JMeter's future. These are good questions to ask since it seems from my, lurking, point of view that the project is fairly tenuous at the moment.

For a project to survive at Apache, it needs to have an active development and user community supporting it. I think it was clear that Mike was the only really active developer on JMeter. This situation wasn't great since with only a few committers, JMeter could probably not make an official release. Mike's recent statement, however, suggests that the project is now effectively unmaintained. I have seen only one other committer post to the list and no recent commits.

Who am I to be making these judgements? Until recently I was a member of the Jakarta PMC and I am now a member of the Apache Ant PMC. I have a passing interest in JMeter as I have needed load testing tools on some occasions.

The future of JMeter is in your hands (You being the JMeter development community, the subscribers of this list). What do you see as the future? Do you want to develop JMeter? What is your level of interest in JMeter?

Believe me, I don't know the answers to these questions and I'm not sure of the way forward. Some level of interest is going to be needed to ensure JMeter is viable.

I also plan to ask these questions on the Jakarta general list to see what external interest exists for the project which might be harnessed but I thought this list should have a chance to comment first.

if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks
Conor
