This could be done. It would be more consistent to have halos start as 
the color of the atom. But more generally, should there be

select carbon
halo on
color halo red
select oxygen
halo 2.0
color halo green

just like wireframe or dots?

And if so, then how does this relate to "set display selected" which 
would also(?) use halos.

My thought is that "set display selected" could just continue to use 
standard halos, while halo on/off would be an independent beast. Or is 
it important to have the colors upon selection?

Ah, I know. "set display selected" could use the default halo color 
unless atom halo colors had been assigned or the default halo color had 
been set to "NONE". This way it is entirely backward compatible (you 
couldn't set the halo color)

Right now we have:

color selectionHalo red

I think the proposal here is to add:

color selectionHalo NONE

which makes it the underlying color of the atom's halo, if defined, or 
atom if not.

and

halos on/off/diameter
color halos .....

which would be entirely independent things, defaulting to atom color but 
assignable.
