from my perspective, this may be too much detail. I think it would be  
useful to be able to change the color - in effect, allow one to  
distinguish between different sets of selections - but I can't see a  
strong argument for controlling halo diameter, or turning halos on  
independent of the selection mechanism.

it is important to have the colors on selection:

select carbon
color halos cyan
select none
set display selected
select all

the above should display gold halos except for carbons, which will be  
cyan halos.

yes, I like this feature (I would keep the default halo color gold,  
but it's not a big deal).
