I would like feedback from people regarding the cartoon rendering in Jmol.

The rockets/arrows rendering that is currently in Jmol was intended to be
temporary.

(Note that the rockets for helix representation are in the wrong position)

At some level, I would like to be RasMol/Chime compatible ... but higher
quality rendering.

Q: Should the word 'cartoons' be reserved for something that is
(essentially) RasMol/Chime compatible?

yes

Q: Is there a standard definition of what a 'schematic' representaion
should look like?

simplified

Q: What shapes would people like to see for cartoons/schematic rendering?

I like this rigid schematic rendering but it can get very much misleading, look at 1nrm
http://www.imb-jena.de/cgi-bin/SCOPlnk.exe?JMOL=1nrm
select all
color chain
cpk off
wireframe on
restrict *.n,*.ca,*.c,*.o

Gramicidin is a parallel beta sheet with itself forming a helix but the rigid beta sheet shows this as a solitary beta strand nearly perpendicular to the true beta strand

Q: Is there value in having the something like the current simplified
cartoon rendering (with straight arrow-sheets and straight rockets for
helices) ?

yes

Q: other thoughts/comments?

this is a square the circle problem Regards, Jan
