That's exactly the reason: everything else is hidden, so only the
selection halo lets you know that it is there (and selected).

If selection halos would be hidden this would allow for two
possibilities for our Jmol interface at the FLI:

1) don't integrate selection halos any more  (no option, too important!)
2) don't integrate hide/display (what a pity!)

So the only way I can see out of this dilemma is a configuration switch
that determines if selection halos are influenced by hide/display or
not. Since it is only a single line of code somewhere, as you stated
above, it shouldn't be very difficult.
