throwing in my two cents, here... on the day, in nyc, as the morning faded into afternoon and the shock lessened and solid fear moved in...i was sitting in my friend carol's apartment with my friend jon. we were all just kind of trying not freak out, you know, and waiting for "dad" (guliani) to come back on tv and tell us what to do, the fighter jets started flying around the city. i remember distinctly the sound, as we were in carol's apartment on the 6th floor. and we were all just frozen, looking at each other, like is this another plane attacking us? or is it the military? we all ran to the window, and jon assured us that it was our military protecting the air. that was one of the single most scary moments of the day for me. i guess it did make me feel safer, but i don't think there was any way we were going to feel safe that day, really. now, i work in a town called kaysville, in the middle of nowhere, right by Hill Air Force base. there is the constant sound and sight of fighter jets, bombers, f16s, stealths that fly over and stop in, and so on. and it was really disconcerting at first. now i feel protected but still its really eerie. it's this constant reminder of war, and death, and that day. it all goes back to einstein--you can't simultaneously prevent and prepare for war. i wish we were trying harder to prevent it. alison e. in slc. np: the sundays Sign up for SBC Yahoo!
