Well, I knew my favorite music slut would jump in with
this before i had a chance to (hi bob!), but i'll just
chime in to agree with him anyway. As Jim's excellent
post about seeing her in concert would indicate, she
really is phenomenal. She does grate on some nerves,
though, and gets tagged as angry and bitter and so
on...
she can take a little getting used to at first. 
but the poetry, passion and skill are definitely
there!

i would start with "little plastic castles". i think
it's one of her very best. 

also, anything by liz phair is a sure bet, too.
"whitechocolatespaceegg" is a good place to start.
and if you don't have anything by beth orton, get
"central reservation". it's very, very good.
