Julius,

What a neat find!

Of course I also pulled out my STARART early this a.m. and checked it out.
I agree with Debra and Penny that 1966 is probably too early for him to have
known Joni and the lady in the painting looks a little more ah, "mature"
than Joni did at the time. Joni moved to L.A. in very late '67. What is
curious is that Mayall provides a narrative for all of his other works in
the book except this "Untitled" one. Interestingly, there is another gouache
in the book entitled "House in Laurel Canyon," dated 1971. The house,
however, does not appear to be Joni's - it's too big and slapdash modern
where Joni's was more turn-of the-century bungalow from what I've seen in
the Diltz photos. But his rendering in the Laurel Canyon painting does seem
to embody the typical post-war rustic "cabins" that sprung up in the canyons
of L.A. Mayall is a very great artist, IMO, and I used to be absolutely
crazy for his music in the 60s.

I think you should try to win the print, Julius! Even though it is probably
not artist quality, it still would have some worth because there probably
aren't that many copies around.

Penny - it was interesting ro read that one could get some of the prints,
including "Charlie in Mexico" from a form in Rolling Stone back then!
Argh - I subscribed to RS back then and missed it!! I think your print
probably has increased in value, too.
